As political actors in Nigeria begin to chart their course towards the 2027 general elections, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has issued a searing rebuke to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of placing political ambition above the country’s dire security and economic challenges.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the northern socio-political body expressed deep frustration over what it described as the administration’s “ineffective” response to the country’s growing insecurity, particularly in the North. The ACF lamented that while citizens continue to endure hardship, the government appears more focused on orchestrating early defections and mobilising support ahead of the 2027 polls.

> “Rather than address the existential challenges confronting Nigeria, the Tinubu-led government has become preoccupied with power retention and political showmanship,” the Forum stated.

The group also decried what it termed “reckless and insensitive” public spending, pointing to questionable insertions in the 2025 federal budget, including allocations for streetlights reportedly costing over ₦260 million each.

> “That such outrageous figures remain unchallenged by the authorities only confirms the widening gap between Nigeria’s suffering masses and their elected representatives,” ACF said.

According to the Forum, the government’s fixation on optics and political dominance is out of touch with the daily realities of Nigerians who face skyrocketing inflation, declining wages, and rampant insecurity. The group warned that this disconnect risks fuelling widespread public disillusionment and resentment.

“Public officials continue to make delusional claims about improved security, while state governors on the ground paint a much grimmer picture. The contrast is not only alarming—it’s dangerous,” the statement read.

Despite its stern critique, the ACF commended the resilience of Nigerians, particularly Muslims observing the Eid-el-Kabir celebration in the face of economic strain. The group called on public officials to take inspiration from the values of sacrifice and devotion associated with the holy period and embrace governance that is people-centered and accountable.

“That Nigerians can still gather to celebrate is a reflection of a deeply rooted strength and faith—one that should not be mistaken for complacency.”
