Tech giant Meta has sacked around 20 employees for leaking internal company information to the media, following a series of unauthorized disclosures from executive meetings. The move underscores Meta’s growing concern over internal leaks, especially as the company faces scrutiny over policy changes that some critics argue align with the interests of the Trump administration.

Zero Tolerance for Leaks

Confirming the dismissals, a Meta spokesperson stated:

“We tell employees when they join the company, and we offer periodic reminders, that it is against our policies to leak internal information, no matter the intent. We recently conducted an investigation that resulted in roughly 20 employees being terminated for sharing confidential information outside the company, and we expect there will be more.”

The company further warned that it would continue cracking down on leaks and would take disciplinary action whenever such incidents are identified.

Growing Internal Tensions

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been dealing with internal dissent following recent policy changes. Among the controversial decisions was the scrapping of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and the removal of fact-checking efforts, replacing them with a community notes system similar to the one used on X (formerly Twitter).

These changes, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, sparked criticism that Meta was shifting its stance to align with the potential return of former President Donald Trump to the White House.

Zuckerberg Frustrated by Leaks

The frequent leaks have prompted Zuckerberg to become less transparent with employees, admitting during an internal meeting:

“We try to be really open and then everything I say leaks. It sucks.”

Ironically, these remarks were themselves leaked to the media, leading Meta to issue a company-wide memo warning that disclosing internal information to the press was a fireable offense.

Security Chief Speaks Out

Meta’s Chief Information Security Officer, Guy Rosen, emphasized the broader implications of leaks in a memo obtained by the New York Post:

“When information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact. Our teams become demoralized, and we all waste time that is better spent working on our products and toward our goals and mission.”

Similarly, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, confirmed that the company was “making progress on catching people.” That statement, ironically, was also leaked.

Meta’s Tough Stance on Internal Breaches

This latest crackdown signals Meta’s firm stance on leaks and its willingness to enforce strict disciplinary measures against employees who disclose confidential company information.

With growing internal discontent and increased media scrutiny, it remains to be seen how Meta will balance openness with its determination to prevent leaks—especially when even its warnings continue to find their way into the press.
