Blackout as Power Generation Drops Below 1,500MW
Abuja – March 8, 2025 – Nigeria’s electricity grid suffered another major collapse on Friday, plunging the country into darkness as power generation dropped from 3,366.88 megawatts (MW) at 1 pm to just 1,417.85MW by 3 pm.
Data from the National Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that the number of active power plants on the grid fell from 22 at 1 pm to only 13 by 3 pm, signaling another wave of instability in the sector. This marks the second major power supply crisis in 2025, further deepening concerns over Nigeria’s struggling electricity infrastructure.
From Celebration to Collapse
The latest grid failure comes just two days after the Federal Government celebrated a supposed peak generation of over 5,800MW—a figure power sector experts dismissed as deceptive, as it was sustained for only a brief period.
Amid growing frustration, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, defended the government’s ongoing tariff regularization policy, arguing that it will help boost available generation capacity to 7,000MW.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu stressed that resolving financial shortfalls is key to stabilizing the power sector.
“To sustain these improvements, the Government would have to pay down on the tariff shortfalls of ₦1.94 trillion for 2024 and clear legacy debts of ₦2 trillion owed to power generation companies (GENCOs),” he stated.

The minister also reiterated the need for full tariff reforms, urging Nigerians to start paying for the actual energy they consume.
A Sector in Deep Crisis
Despite government assurances, frequent power grid collapses continue to disrupt economic activities and daily life. Experts warn that unless gas supply issues, transmission failures, and financial instability are tackled, Nigeria’s electricity crisis will only worsen.
With yet another blackout sweeping across the nation, millions of Nigerians are left asking: When will the lights finally stay on?
