Tinubu Renames Federal Varsity After Maitama Sule

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, after the late elder statesman, Yusuf Maitama Sule. The institution will now be known as Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.
The decision, announced in a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, is part of efforts to honour the legacy of the late nationalist and diplomat, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s socio-political development.
Maitama Sule (1929–2017) was a key figure in Nigeria’s pre- and post-independence history, serving as chief whip of the Federal House of Representatives from 1954 to 1959. He was also Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid. His other roles included leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 1960 Conference of Independent States, serving as the first federal commissioner of public complaints in 1976, and holding the position of minister of mines and power.
President Tinubu noted that immortalising Mr. Sule’s name would serve as an inspiration for younger generations to embrace values such as integrity, patriotism, character, and nationalism. He also emphasised that the university, as a federal institution, would continue to play a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s education sector by producing quality teachers.
The Federal University of Education, Kano, was originally owned by the Kano State government before becoming one of seven specialised universities of education under the federal government. Its renaming aligns with Tinubu’s broader agenda of recognizing and celebrating Nigeria’s historical figures.
The move has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some applauding the honour bestowed on Maitama Sule, while others argue that renaming institutions should be secondary to addressing pressing challenges in the education sector. Nonetheless, the decision underscores the administration’s emphasis on national heritage and historical recognition.
