Grenade Attack Kills Three, Injures Nine in Colombia’s Capital
Bogotá, Colombia – A deadly grenade attack by a local gang rocked Bogotá late Wednesday, leaving three people dead and nine others wounded, city officials confirmed.
The incident occurred in the San Bernardo neighborhood, an area notorious for drug-related violence. According to Bogotá’s mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, the attack was a desperate act by criminal gangs resisting a police crackdown.
“Tonight, a new explosive device was thrown into a crowd of people… unfortunately leaving three dead and at least nine wounded,” Galán announced on social media platform X shortly before midnight (0500 GMT Thursday).
Gang Wars Escalate in Bogotá
Authorities suspect the attack is part of an ongoing turf war between two rival criminal groups. Bogotá’s police commander, Giovanni Cristancho, stated that the gangs are fighting for control of drug trafficking operations in the area.
“This new attack, like previous ones in the same area, is a reaction of criminal gangs seeking to survive the sustained siege of the Bogotá police on their structures in the San Bernardo neighborhood,” Galán explained.
The mayor ordered security forces to “intensify pressure” on gang operations and capture their leaders.
A Troubled Neighborhood
San Bernardo, once a hub for furniture manufacturing, has deteriorated into a hotspot for drug consumption and trafficking. The presence of unhoused individuals and drug users has made it a target for criminal exploitation.
This latest explosion follows a similar attack just three weeks ago when a grenade blast killed one homeless person and wounded seven others.
Authorities on High Alert
With rising gang violence threatening Bogotá’s security, the government faces mounting pressure to dismantle these criminal networks. The city has increased police patrols and intelligence operations in affected areas, but gang activity remains persistent.
Residents fear that without decisive action, San Bernardo could become even more dangerous. As Bogotá mourns the latest victims, authorities remain locked in a battle to reclaim control from violent criminal groups.
