Trump Urges Russia to ‘Do the Right Thing’ on Ceasefire Proposal
President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Russia will “do the right thing” following President Vladimir Putin’s rejection of a U.S.-backed 30-day ceasefire proposal in Ukraine.
Despite initially stating he was “in favor” of the proposal during a press conference on Thursday, Putin later insisted that Washington must first answer “serious questions” before any agreement could be reached.
Serious Discussions Underway
Speaking later in the day, President Trump confirmed that Russia had not yet accepted the ceasefire proposal but emphasized that negotiations were ongoing.
“At this moment, we have people talking in Russia, we have representatives over there, Steve Witkoff and others. They’re in very serious discussions,” Trump said.
Trump, who has repeatedly signaled his desire to bring an end to the war, reiterated that his administration remains committed to securing peace.
“We know where we are with Ukraine. Hopefully, they’ll do the right thing,” he said, referring to Russia’s position. He described Putin’s response as “promising but incomplete.”
Putin Open to Direct Talks
In his remarks, Putin suggested that direct communication with the U.S. president might be necessary to move negotiations forward.
“I think we need to talk to our American colleagues… Maybe have a phone call with President Trump and discuss this with him,” Putin said.

The war in Ukraine, now entering its third year, remains one of the most pressing global conflicts. With Trump signaling a hands-on approach to diplomacy, the coming days may determine whether a ceasefire deal can be reached or if the stalemate will continue.
