Hundreds Rally in Support of Suspended Senator

Protests have erupted across Kogi Central as hundreds of constituents take to the streets in support of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following attempts to initiate a recall process against her. The demonstration underscores growing political tensions in the district, with many seeing the recall as a politically motivated move.

Suspension Sparks Outrage

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the Senate, was suspended on March 6 for what the Senate described as “gross misconduct.” The action stemmed from a dispute over seating arrangements with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when the senator accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, fueling speculations that her suspension was more than just a disciplinary measure. Shortly after, efforts to recall her from office gained traction, sparking outrage among her supporters.

Demonstrators Reject Recall Move

Protesters carrying banners with inscriptions such as “Natasha, Pride of Kogi Central” and “We Stand with Natasha” gathered to express their disapproval of the recall process.

Amidst chants and speeches, demonstrators mocked those supporting the recall, alleging that they were lured with ₦10,000 and jollof rice by Akpabio’s camp. The protesters insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan remains their preferred representative and vowed to resist any move to oust her undemocratically.

Court Rulings Add to the Drama

The recall effort has also triggered legal battles. On Thursday, the Federal High Court in Lokoja issued an injunction restraining INEC from taking any action on the recall petitions. However, just a day later, the court vacated the order, affirming that the recall process remains a legitimate right of constituents.

This swift legal turnaround has deepened the political uncertainty surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s fate, as both sides prepare for the next phase of the battle.

Political Tensions Continue to Rise

With the INEC-cleared recall process moving forward and Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters fiercely resisting, Kogi Central is witnessing a political showdown like never before.

As the drama unfolds, one question remains: Is this a genuine democratic exercise or a politically orchestrated attack?

Only time will tell whether Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will overcome this challenge or be forced out of office. For now, her supporters are making it clear—they are ready to fight for their senator.
