The Cross River State Police Command has launched urgent efforts to calm tensions in Calabar after a tragic shooting incident involving one of its officers. The officer, identified as Inspector Effiong Bassey, allegedly ran amok and opened fire on civilians, killing three people and injuring several others.

The shocking incident occurred before 6:00 AM on Sunday at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters, near the bustling Watt Market. Panic and fear spread as people scrambled for safety.

Police Confirm Incident, Call for Calm

In a statement issued by Superintendent Irene Ugbo, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, the police confirmed the shooting and assured the public that an investigation was underway.

> “Efforts to engage with key stakeholders are ongoing to ensure that the tension in the community is de-escalated,” the statement read.

 

How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to the police report, Inspector Bassey, who had just returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank, suddenly displayed abnormal behavior.

He refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle.

He blocked the station’s gate, preventing movement in and out.

Despite efforts to calm him down, he opened fire on bystanders, leading to fatalities and injuries.

Victims of the Shooting

The shooting spree left three people dead and three others injured. Among the deceased was Ijeoma Wilson Obot, 41, who succumbed to her injuries. The two other victims, Charles Mkpang and another unnamed individual, are currently receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Inspector Bassey Subdued and Arrested

Following the chaos, tactical police units swiftly intervened, overpowering and disarming Inspector Bassey. He has since been arrested and detained, with investigations ongoing to determine the cause of his violent outburst.

Police Authorities Visit Victims, Assure Justice

The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, Mohammed Bala, alongside the Cross River State Command Management Team, visited the victims at the hospital.

While extending condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, the Police Command urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

Mental Health Concerns in Law Enforcement

This tragic incident raises fresh concerns about mental health screening and support systems for police officers. Cases of armed personnel exhibiting erratic behavior pose serious risks to public safety.
