Tinubu Appoints Nasir Naeem Abdulsalam as New MD of Ajaokuta Steel
By Ricky Awodi
In a decisive move to revive Nigeria’s steel dreams, President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Nasir Naeem Abdulsalam as the new Managing Director of Ajaokuta Steel Company, located in Kogi State.
The announcement came through a statement released by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. According to the statement, Abdulsalam’s appointment officially kicks off on April 3rd, 2025.
A Leadership Choice Backed by Experience
Before stepping into this crucial role, Nasir Abdulsalam wore multiple hats in Nigeria’s public sector. He previously served as Technical Adviser to the Minister of Steel Development and also took on responsibilities as Special Assistant (Academics) to the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).
His appointment aligns with the stipulations of the Certain Political and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, 2008, as amended — ensuring all due process was followed.
Tasked With Reviving Nigeria’s Steel Giant
President Tinubu didn’t just hand over the reins — he delivered a clear mandate. The President urged Abdulsalam to bring his rich background in the steel sector to bear, revitalizing Ajaokuta Steel and unlocking the vast potential for both upstream and downstream industrial growth.
In his words, Tinubu charged the new MD to “position the nation as the industrial hub of Africa,” echoing the ambitions of his Renewed Hope Agenda, which places heavy emphasis on economic diversification and industrialisation.

The Bigger Picture: Industrialisation and Economic Growth
The appointment signals a renewed focus on Nigeria’s long-abandoned steel aspirations. If successfully executed, the revival of Ajaokuta Steel could spark a ripple effect of job creation, local manufacturing boost, and increased export potential, setting the stage for Nigeria to emerge as a true industrial powerhouse on the continent.
