Autopsy Reveals Cardiac Arrest as Cause of Nigerian Boxer Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju’s Deat

An autopsy on the late Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, has confirmed that the 40-year-old died of cardiac arrest after collapsing during a match at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, was up against Accra-born fighter John Mbanugu, popularly known as “Power,” in an undercard bout when tragedy struck. Midway through the fight, Olanrewaju suddenly slumped to the canvas, prompting the referee to halt the contest and call for urgent medical assistance. Despite swift intervention by ringside medics, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead.

Speaking to journalists about the autopsy results, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West African Boxing Union, Remi Aboderin, revealed that the initial findings pointed to cardiac arrest. However, he noted that further investigation is necessary before final conclusions can be drawn and before the body is released for burial.

“The preliminary post-mortem results indicate that Segun died from sudden cardiac arrest. But further investigation into his heart condition is required, and as a result, his body will not be released to Nigeria for burial until approximately two weeks,” Aboderin explained.

The autopsy was carried out on Wednesday, April 2, following a court order authorizing a full examination into the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s untimely death.
