One-Party State: If That’s What Nigerians Want, So Be It – Ganduje
Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), isn’t losing sleep over opposition claims that the country is sliding toward a one-party system. In fact, APC’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, says if that’s what Nigerians want, the party won’t stand in the way.
Ganduje made the remarks after meeting President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday. His visit included three PDP senators from Kebbi State who’ve reportedly agreed to defect to the APC.
“One-Party State? No Problem”
Addressing reporters, Ganduje framed the issue as a matter of choice, not force:
“If a one-party system becomes Nigeria’s wish—or even a blessing—so be it. It’s not about coercion. It’s about other parties recognizing APC’s good governance and joining willingly. Look at China: a global powerhouse with one party. We’re not pushing for it, but if Nigerians lean that way, who are we to argue? After all, too many cooks spoil the soup, and too many parties can spoil governance.”
Defections Galore
The Kebbi senators’ planned move is part of a broader trend. Ganduje noted that Tinubu’s strategy to grow APC’s “numerical strength and quality” is working:
“These senators didn’t decide overnight. There were behind-the-scenes talks with Kebbi’s major stakeholders. By Tuesday, you’ll see the Red Chamber shake-up firsthand. Nearly every week, lawmakers from other parties cross to APC—it’s a sign of Nigeria’s political mood.”

When asked about integrating new members, Ganduje assured smooth transitions, citing the party’s “political dexterity” and constitutional clarity.
Why It Matters
The statement comes amid rising defections to APC, sparking debates about opposition viability. Ganduje’s China comparison and folksy “cooks spoiling soup” analogy frame the shift as organic—but critics warn of reduced democratic checks.
