Man Who Burned Bible and Posted Video Online Found Shot Dead
Tianguá, Brazil – A 47-year-old man who sparked outrage by posting a video of himself burning a Bible has been found dead, riddled with bullets, in what authorities are treating as a homicide.
The victim, identified as Antônio Rocha de Sousa, was discovered on Wednesday, May 14. Police say the body was either found on a public street or inside his home in Tianguá, a city west of Fortaleza, depending on conflicting reports. He was reportedly living alone at the time of his death.
Just 10 days earlier, Antônio had posted a provocative video online, showing himself setting a Bible on fire while challenging religious beliefs. In the video, he says:
“This here is a Bible, which they say is sacred. Look what it does when faced with fire. It burns… To me, God doesn’t exist. This is just a way to enslave and manipulate people. It’s time to wake up – God doesn’t exist.”
Police confirmed they are investigating his death and have not ruled out any motives. A spokesperson stated: “We are looking into all possibilities.” Investigators are probing whether the killing may be connected to the video or to Antônio’s checkered past.
Authorities had already launched an investigation into theft, criminal damage, and sacrilege on May 10, four days before his death. They suspect the Bible used in the video may have been stolen. Antônio also had prior allegations against him, including grievous bodily harm, and was known for controversial social media posts.
His final message on social media appeared cryptic, referencing faith and redemption: “Follower of Christ, (peacekeeper of Peace). Born again in (Christ), among the living, who were once dead… after having been tested, tried, and approved by God.”

The case echoes that of Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee in Sweden who also stirred global attention by burning Qurans. He was fatally shot in his apartment in Södertälje earlier this year.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with Antônio’s death. Police continue to appeal for information as investigations deepen into the motive and perpetrators.
