Abuja, Nigeria
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has confirmed that a high-level meeting of opposition figures was held in Abuja on Tuesday night, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the Arewa TechFest in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai disclosed that the coalition is working towards dislodging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from power, asserting that plans are underway to “send him back to Lagos.”
El-Rufai, a former ally of President Tinubu, indicated that while the coalition seeks a change in leadership, it intends to retain some current administration figures deemed competent—specifically singling out Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, for praise.
“Yesterday at 8 PM, there was a very important meeting of the coalition we’re putting together to ensure that President Tinubu goes back to Lagos,” El-Rufai stated. “Though we will still keep Bosun Tijani because he is doing good work.”
This political realignment appears to be gaining traction, as sources confirmed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and El-Rufai have reached a consensus to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s official political platform.
“They have adopted the African Democratic Congress as the coalition party,” an insider familiar with the talks told DAILY POST. “All of them—Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai—are working together. They came to the conclusion last night, into the early hours of this morning.”
The move signals a dramatic reshaping of Nigeria’s opposition front, potentially bridging ideological divides between key political figures once viewed as rivals.
With the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) facing growing scrutiny over economic hardship, insecurity, and internal dissent, the formation of a united opposition bloc could pose a formidable challenge to President Tinubu’s reelection ambitions.
Observers say the unfolding alliance may dramatically alter the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race, especially if it successfully consolidates voter bases across the North and South.
