“They Stole His Future”: Father of 15-Year-Old Shot by Police in Ibadan Speaks Out

Odunayo Alade, the grieving father of 15-year-old Kehinde Alade, has broken his silence following the tragic death of his son, who was struck by a stray police bullet during a chaotic incident in Ibadan. The heartbroken father recounted the harrowing moments that led to the fatal shooting, insisting he was only trying to take his children to school when the tragedy unfolded.

According to Alade, the incident began shortly after he pumped his car tyre at a nearby vulcaniser. As he pulled back onto the road, a vehicle attempted to block his path.

“I didn’t know they were traffic officials,” he explained. “I thought it was just another driver trying to stop me for some unknown reason.”

The officials turned out to be from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA). Alade said their vehicle collided with his as they attempted to stop him. Fearing trouble, and with five schoolchildren in his car—including his twin sons, Kehinde and Taiwo—he tried to drive away, unaware that the situation was spiraling into a dangerous misunderstanding.

“Suddenly, more vehicles started chasing me. Their towing van hit my car. I maneuvered to escape. That’s when I heard the gunshot,” Alade recounted, his voice cracking. “Kehinde was shouting ‘Daddy, daddy’ from the back seat. I thought it was just fear. But then Taiwo screamed, ‘Daddy, stop! Taiwo has been shot!’”

Panic gave way to horror as Alade realized his son had been hit by a bullet fired during the chase. He pulled over to help, but the police and traffic officials were still pursuing him.

“As I tried to bring him out, the officials were still chasing me like I was a criminal,” he said. “I held one of them, begging for help. People gathered and rushed my son to the hospital. From there, we took him to UCH. But it was too late. He died.”

Alade has been a single father since his wife left seven years ago. He said he had devoted himself entirely to raising his children, often turning down opportunities to remarry to avoid disrupting their lives.

“I promised myself they would have the best life I could give. Kehinde had dreams. He loved school. Now he’s gone. And for what? A reckless chase over nothing.”

He insists he was never a suspect, only a father trying to get his children to school.

“They saw I had kids in the car. I wasn’t breaking any law knowingly. I was confused, not criminal.”

Now, he is demanding justice.

“This cannot go unpunished. The people responsible must be held accountable. No parent should suffer what I’m going through.”

With visible pain in his voice, Alade concluded: “Kehinde was full of life. He had dreams, goals, hope. Everything was ahead of him. It’s all been taken—by those who are supposed to protect us.”
