The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has strongly defended the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), reaffirming its status as one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments after Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher downplayed its significance.
Carragher’s remarks came during a discussion on Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or this year. While evaluating Salah’s credentials, Carragher suggested that achievements in the AFCON carry less weight compared to European tournaments, sparking widespread criticism across Africa and beyond.

In a swift response, CAF emphasized AFCON’s historical importance and global reach. “AFCON is Africa’s premier football competition, showcasing the immense talent of a continent passionate about the beautiful game,” CAF stated. “It has produced legends, inspired millions, and deserves the same respect as other continental tournaments.”
AFCON, held biennially, draws massive global audiences and has consistently featured top players from elite European leagues. Salah, a key figure for Egypt and Liverpool, has always highlighted his pride in representing his country at the tournament.
Football fans and African players have also voiced their disappointment at Carragher’s comments. Nigerian international Wilfred Ndidi called for “equal respect for all continental competitions,” while South African legend Benni McCarthy described the remarks as “ignorant and dismissive.”
This controversy reignites the long-standing debate over how African football is perceived globally. Despite the criticism, AFCON continues to grow in prominence, with the latest edition drawing record viewership and attracting significant sponsorship deals.
Carragher has yet to issue a public apology or clarification regarding his comments. Meanwhile, Salah remains focused on his club and national team duties, letting his performances speak louder than the ongoing debate.
