6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Causes Panic
Kathmandu, Nepal – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Nepal’s Sindhupalchok District early Friday, jolting residents awake but causing minimal reported damage. The tremor, recorded near Bhairab Kunda, close to the Himalayan mountain range bordering Tibet, triggered concerns in a region prone to seismic activity.
According to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, the quake’s epicenter lay in Bhote Koshi rural municipality, an area already familiar with past earthquakes. However, conflicting magnitude estimates emerged from international monitoring agencies. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) placed the earthquake at magnitude 5.6 with a depth of 10 kilometers, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) registered it as a 5.5-magnitude event.
Minimal Damage, but Panic Ensues
Despite the significant tremor, there were no immediate reports of fatalities or major destruction. However, some minor incidents were recorded.

Pasang Nurpu Sherpa, chairman of Bhote Koshi rural municipality, confirmed that a landslide occurred at Dugunagadi Bhir across the river but noted that no homes were affected.

Kiran Thapa, governor of Sindhupalchok district, reported that one inmate from the district jail suffered a broken hand while trying to flee during the tremor. He is currently receiving medical attention. Additionally, a police post building in Kodari sustained minor cracks.
Eyewitnesses described the intensity of the quake. “It shook us from our sleep strongly,” said Ganesh Nepali, a senior official from Sindhupalchok. “We rushed out of our home, but people have now returned. No major damage or injuries have been reported.”
Seismic Concerns in Nepal
Nepal sits on a highly active seismic zone along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country has experienced several devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 7.8-magnitude quake in 2015 that killed nearly 9,000 people and flattened entire towns.
Although Friday’s earthquake did not result in severe damage, it serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic disasters. Experts continue to emphasize the need for preparedness and stronger infrastructure to mitigate future risks.
Authorities are monitoring the situation for any aftershocks, and residents remain on alert. While Nepal breathes a sigh of relief this time, the tremor highlights the ever-present threat posed by the shifting Himalayan fault lines.
