Fubara Vows to Implement Supreme Court Verdict

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured residents that his administration will comply with the Supreme Court’s verdict on the contentious local government elections, following a thorough review of its Certified True Copy (CTC).

The governor’s statement comes in the wake of the apex court’s ruling last Friday, which nullified the October 5, 2024, local council polls in Rivers State. In addition, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation to halt the monthly federal allocation to the state’s local governments.

Fubara: We Will Uphold the Law

In a statewide address, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to constitutional governance while acknowledging disagreements with the ruling.

“My dear people of Rivers State, we are all aware of the recent Supreme Court judgments and pronouncements regarding aspects of the lingering political disputes in our dear state,” he said.

“Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government.”

He revealed that his legal team expects to obtain the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025, after which his government will examine the document and implement the verdict accordingly.

Given the Supreme Court’s stance on caretaker committees in local governments, Fubara announced that Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) will take charge of the 23 councils pending fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. He also directed the outgoing local government chairmen to handover administrative duties to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.

Urging calm, he reassured citizens that his administration would work towards stability despite the challenging circumstances.
