Panic in Abeokuta as Gas Truck Sparks Fire at National Sports Festival Venue
A tense moment unfolded on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta — one of the venues for the 2024 National Sports Festival — after a gas truck suddenly went up in flames.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck was supplying gas to power the complex’s generator when it caught fire, sending athletes, spectators, and officials scrambling for safety.
“I just heard a loud whoosh and people started yelling and running,” said one of the athletes at the scene.
Thankfully, emergency responders arrived swiftly and were able to bring the situation under control before it caused major damage. So far, there are no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities.

Despite the scare, the games must go on. Activities including handball, squash, and badminton had resumed by the time this report was filed, with organizers assuring the public that everything is now under control.
