Anambra Teen Mum, Newborn Hospitalised After Alleged Attempted Infanticide

By Parrot Newspaper Investigative Desk

Anambra State was gripped by shock on Wednesday, May 22, as news emerged of a 19-year-old mother who reportedly gave birth alone, allegedly injured her newborn, and dumped the baby in a gutter before being traced and found bleeding at home.

According to eyewitness accounts and a video shared by Facebook user Chinenye Henrietta, the teenage girl had concealed her pregnancy from her family. She is said to have gone into labour while alone at home and delivered the baby without medical assistance or supervision.

In a disturbing turn, residents allege the girl stabbed the newborn in the throat and left him in a nearby drainage. A child who witnessed her actions reportedly raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to search the area. They eventually discovered the injured infant and traced the teenage mother back to her home, where she was found in a pool of blood.

Both the mother and child were immediately rushed to a local hospital. Medical personnel are currently treating them, and their conditions remain undisclosed as of press time.

While initial public reactions suggest a deliberate attempt to kill the baby, alternate accounts from within the community propose a different narrative. Some residents claim the young mother may have panicked after childbirth and accidentally injured both herself and the baby while attempting to sever the placenta with a sharp object.

No arrests have been made, and local authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Efforts to confirm whether a formal investigation has commenced were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The case raises critical questions about teenage pregnancy, mental health, and access to reproductive education in Nigeria. Advocates say the incident highlights the need for early intervention programs and greater family and community support systems for vulnerable young girls.
