Liverpool stunned Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) with a last-gasp 1-0 victory in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash, despite being outplayed for most of the match. The Reds’ only shot on target, an 87th-minute goal from substitute Harvey Elliott, proved to be the difference in a match where PSG dominated but failed to convert their chances.

The French champions had 27 shots in total, with 10 on target, but were repeatedly denied by a sensational performance from Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. The Brazilian shot-stopper produced a series of breathtaking saves, frustrating Kylian Mbappe and company throughout the game. PSG also had a goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ruled out for offside in the first half, adding to their frustrations on the night.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who was covering the game for CBS Sports, did not hold back in his assessment, calling the result ‘one of the biggest robberies you will EVER see in football.’ He emphasized that Liverpool were second-best for most of the match but credited Alisson’s heroics as the key factor behind the shocking result.

“That was an absolute robbery,” Carragher said. “PSG should have won this by at least three or four goals, but Alisson has just delivered a performance that will be remembered for years. He saved Liverpool tonight, and this will go down as one of the greatest goalkeeping displays in Champions League history.”

The result puts Liverpool in a strong position heading into the second leg at Anfield, where PSG will need to overturn the deficit to keep their European dreams alive. While the French side will feel hard done by, Arne Slot’s men will take confidence from their ability to grind out a win under immense pressure.
