The Rivers State Government has shut down a clinic in Borokiri, Port Harcourt, after the tragic death of Mrs. Victoria Paris—a story first broken by Parrot Newspaper last week, Read here.

Our report triggered swift intervention from health authorities, marking a significant step in the fight against medical quackery.

Mrs. Paris died shortly after undergoing a caesarean section at the unlicensed facility, where she was reportedly denied a lifesaving blood transfusion due to religious reasons. Her death sparked outrage across the state, prompting an urgent inspection by the Rivers State Anti-Quackery Committee.

Led by Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, Director of Medical Services, the team discovered that the clinic, located on Captain Amangala Street, operated illegally from a three-bedroom flat converted into a six-bed maternity. The facility was run by one Comfort Etuk and had no licensed nurse on duty, yet was carrying out surgical procedures in an unsafe, poorly equipped environment.

Dr. Hope Avundaa, speaking on behalf of the Anti-Quackery Committee, confirmed that the clinic lacked proper sterilization equipment and failed basic Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards. The facility’s license has now been revoked, and all health workers involved have been summoned to face the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

“This is a wake-up call,” he said. “Medical professionals must stop affiliating with unsafe, unregulated clinics. Lives are at stake.”
