Deadly Toilet Tissues: How Unipack International Products Limited and Regulatory Agencies Endanger Public Health

By Ricky Awodi, Parrot Newspaper

In a shocking revelation, Unipack International Products Limited, located at Plot C9, Kaduna Industrial Estate, Kaduna State, Nigeria, has been found producing and selling substandard toilet tissue, raising serious questions about the failure of regulatory agencies to protect Nigerian consumers. The implications of this reckless disregard for quality control could be devastating, yet no sanctions have been placed on the company.

A Purchase Gone Wrong

It started with a simple purchase—an ordinary pack of toilet tissue. But what I got was a flimsy, weak, and ineffective product that disintegrated at the slightest touch. The texture was rough, the quality abysmal, and it was clear that it did not meet the minimum hygiene and safety standards expected of such a product.

Regulators Missing in Action

Nigeria has multiple agencies tasked with ensuring consumer products meet safety and quality standards, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Yet, Unipack International Products Limited continues to produce and distribute substandard toilet tissues unchecked.

Where are the regulators? How did such a product make it into the market? Who approved it, and why? The failure of these agencies to act raises suspicions of either gross incompetence or deep-rooted corruption. How many other hazardous products have been allowed into Nigerian homes because of regulatory negligence?

Unipack’s Shameless Justification

In an effort to get clarity, Parrot Newspaper reached out to Unipack International Products Limited for an explanation. Their response? A dismissive statement claiming that the low-quality toilet tissue is “meant for low-income earners.”

This response is not just insulting—it is criminal. Are the lives and health of low-income Nigerians worth less than those who can afford premium products? Should a person’s financial status determine whether they deserve safe and hygienic products?

The Implications: A Public Health Hazard

Substandard toilet tissue is not just an inconvenience—it is a public health hazard. Poor-quality tissue can:

Cause infections and skin irritation due to its rough texture and potential exposure to harmful chemicals.

Fail to properly clean, increasing the risk of bacterial and viral infections.

Contribute to clogged sewage systems, leading to environmental and infrastructural damage.

By allowing this product to flood the market, Unipack and regulatory agencies are actively endangering the health of Nigerians.

Who is Protecting Nigerians?

This case is a clear indictment of Nigeria’s regulatory agencies. Their failure to enforce quality control standards suggests complicity or corruption, leaving citizens vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous manufacturers like Unipack.

If this is happening with toilet tissues, what about other household products, medical supplies, and even food items? How many other dangerous, substandard goods are being sold to unsuspecting Nigerians under the watch of failed regulators?

Enough is Enough!

The government must immediately:

Investigate Unipack International Products Limited and sanction them for producing substandard products.

Hold SON, NAFDAC, and other regulatory bodies accountable for their failure to enforce quality standards.

Launch a nationwide crackdown on substandard products across industries.

Nigerians deserve better. We will not remain silent while businesses profit off the suffering of ordinary citizens.

This is not just about one bad pack of toilet tissue—it is about a system that allows companies to gamble with our health and safety while regulators look the other way.

Who will stand up for Nigerians if those tasked with protecting us have sold out?
