Authorities have shed new light on the chilling case of Nathan Carman, a Vermont man charged with the murder of his mother, Linda Carman, whose death has remained shrouded in mystery for years. On April 4, detectives shared revealing details on ABC’s 20/20, deepening the unsettling narrative of a man linked to multiple tragedies, including the shooting death of his grandfather.
Nathan Carman’s story began with a seemingly routine fishing trip off the coast of Rhode Island in 2016, a trip that would tragically end with his mother’s disappearance. After the incident, Nathan claimed that he and his mother were thrown into the water when the boat sank. However, his statements raised red flags.
“There were too many inconsistencies. There were too many things that just didn’t add up,” Special Agent Eric Gempp said, casting doubt on Nathan’s account. According to his version, he did not realize the boat was sinking until it was too late. He also told police that he never saw his mother after the boat capsized. Adding to the puzzle, he filed an $85,000 insurance claim for the boat, claiming it had drifted eastward—a claim oceanographer Richard Limeburner quickly disproved, stating the currents would have carried the boat in the opposite direction.
Nathan’s inconsistencies didn’t stop there. Investigators discovered a disturbing detail: he had left a bucket of fishing bait in his car, which contradicted his account of the fishing trip. Despite his failed insurance claim, no conclusive evidence pointed directly to him intentionally sinking the boat, leaving many unanswered questions.
But the fishing trip was only one chapter in Nathan’s troubled past. In December 2013, his wealthy grandfather, John Chakalos, was found shot dead in his Connecticut home. Nathan was quickly linked to the case after ballistics tests revealed the use of a SIG Sauer rifle, a weapon Nathan had purchased weeks before the shooting. When questioned about the gun, Nathan claimed he had lost it, but the weapon was never recovered.
Adding to the mounting suspicions, Nathan couldn’t account for an hour of his time on the day of his grandfather’s death. Despite claiming he was lost on his way to a fishing trip, investigators uncovered this missing hour—a key detail that further raised doubts about Nathan’s innocence.
