Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson and seasoned political strategist, has passed away at the age of 72. His death was confirmed on Friday, though the circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear at the time of filing this report.

Okupe, a trained physician and co-founder of Royal Cross Medical Centre, played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape. He served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and later as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

In the buildup to the 2023 presidential election, Okupe was appointed Director-General of Peter Obi’s campaign. However, his journey with the Labour Party was short-lived, as he stepped down in December 2022 after being convicted of money laundering. Following the fallout of the 2023 elections, he resigned from the party and later emerged as a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Okupe’s political career was marked by both influence and controversy. He was once detained under General Sani Abacha’s regime and later disqualified from participating in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries. In Ogun State, he made an unsuccessful bid for the governorship under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
