Duterte Refuses Fingerprints, Resists Arrest as ICC Takes Him to The Hague

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s dramatic arrest and extradition to the International Criminal Court (ICC) took an intense turn when he refused fingerprinting and openly challenged law enforcement officers, telling them, “You have to kill me to bring me to The Hague.”

Defiance and Standoff at Air Base

Duterte was apprehended Tuesday at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport upon his return from Hong Kong with his family and close associates. Instead of a routine transfer, the former leader staged a fierce resistance at Villamor Air Base, where he was taken for booking.

According to Police Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre, Duterte refused to be fingerprinted and threatened officers with lawsuits. His family, lawyers, and supporters physically blocked his transfer, delaying his extradition for nearly 12 hours. Despite the standoff, authorities eventually succeeded in placing him aboard a government-chartered Gulfstream G550 jet bound for The Hague.

Facing the ICC for Crimes Against Humanity

Upon arrival at the ICC detention center near the Dutch North Sea coast, Duterte underwent medical checks. He is set to appear before ICC judges on Friday, where he will be informed of the charges against him, including allegations of crimes against humanity over his brutal anti-drug crackdown.

Human rights groups have hailed his arrest as a historic victory against state impunity, while his supporters argue that the current Philippine government has betrayed him by surrendering to an international court whose jurisdiction they dispute.

Duterte’s Fall from Power

Duterte, once a feared leader known for his ruthless policies and controversial remarks—including insults directed at Pope Francis and former U.S. President Barack Obama—now faces a reckoning on the world stage. His refusal to comply with law enforcement highlights his continued defiance, even in detention.
