EFCC Arrests Gov Okpebholo’s Aide Over Alleged Naira Abuse

EFCC Arrests Gov Okpebholo’s Aide Over Alleged Naira Abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Kelly Okungbowa, also known as “Ebo Stone,” over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency. Okungbowa, who was the coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) before his suspension, was taken into custody by operatives of the EFCC’s Benin zonal office on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Arrest and Allegations

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Okungbowa was apprehended following a viral video showing him spraying and mutilating naira notes at a bar in Benin City on March 9, 2025. The act, which violates the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, has drawn widespread condemnation.

“The suspect was arrested owing to a viral video where he was seen spraying and mutilating the naira at a bar,” Oyewale stated, adding that Okungbowa will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

PDP Applauds EFCC’s Swift Action

Reacting to the development, the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) commended the EFCC for its prompt action. In a statement, Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the state’s caretaker committee, urged the anti-graft agency to ensure thorough investigation and diligent prosecution.

EFCC Arrests Gov Okpebholo’s Aide

“The swift arrest of Okungbowa sends a strong message that such criminal and irresponsible actions will not be tolerated, regardless of the perpetrator’s position or influence,” Nehikhare stated. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the CBN Act, which criminalizes naira abuse, including spraying, stepping on, or defacing currency notes.

Edo Government Distances Itself from the Controversy

Okungbowa’s arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of government officials in Edo State. His suspension follows a similar action against another aide, Monday Okpebholo, who was recently relieved of his duties over allegations of extortion, harassment, and misconduct.

The Edo State government has since distanced itself from officials found engaging in illegal activities, reinforcing its stance on discipline and accountability.

Legal Implications and the Crackdown on Naira Abuse

Under the CBN Act, naira abuse is a criminal offense punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both. The EFCC’s recent crackdown on individuals violating currency laws reflects a broader effort to curb financial recklessness and uphold the integrity of the naira.

Legal experts believe Okungbowa’s prosecution could set a precedent for future cases, reaffirming the government’s commitment to enforcing financial regulations.

Conclusion

The arrest of Kelly Okungbowa underscores the EFCC’s growing intolerance for naira abuse, particularly among public officials. With the agency under pressure to enforce financial discipline, this case could serve as a warning to those who disregard currency regulations.
