Eid-el-Kabir: NLC Urges Hope Amid Soaring Prices, Insecurity

Amid growing frustration among Nigerian workers over economic hardship, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on citizens—especially Muslims celebrating Eid-el-Kabir—not to lose hope in the country.

The message, delivered by NLC Acting President, Comrade Audu Amba, came in a statement on Thursday to mark the Islamic festival. He acknowledged the rising cost of living, insecurity, and other national challenges, but urged Nigerians to remain steadfast.

“We equally urge all Nigerians to not give up hope in their country because of the present challenges,” Amba said. “Let us muster the needed wisdom and courage to confront these challenges head-on for a greater Nigeria.”

The NLC’s message comes at a time when millions of workers across the country are grappling with economic strain. With food prices skyrocketing and the cost of rams for the Eid sacrifice far beyond reach for many households, the festive mood has been dampened by financial anxiety.

Still, the union extended warm wishes to Muslim faithful, hoping for a peaceful and prosperous Eid despite the circumstances. “We wish our Muslim brothers and sisters a renewing Eid filled with love, prosperity, and peace,” the statement read.

In a firm appeal to authorities, the NLC called on all levels of government to take immediate steps to ease the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. “We renew our call on the government to bring down the cost of living and to urgently tackle the spate of insecurity,” the statement continued.

The union emphasized that creating a secure and stable environment is essential not just for economic recovery but also for the spirit of national unity and celebration.

As Nigerians mark Eid under the weight of inflation and fear, the NLC’s message is both a plea for urgent reforms and a call for collective resilience.
