Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, faced a dramatic blockade on Wednesday as he was denied access to the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt. The move comes amid an escalating political rift between Fubara and lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The governor, accompanied by key government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, arrived at the assembly complex only to find the gates locked, barring his entry.

Governor’s Reaction

Addressing journalists at the scene, Fubara expressed frustration over the situation, accusing Speaker Martin Amaewhule of deliberately avoiding communication.

“Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter which was transmitted for this particular invitation. Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today,” he lamented.

Despite the apparent standoff, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to his constitutional responsibilities, insisting that his efforts were aimed at protecting the interests of Rivers people.

“The reason why we are doing this, I have always said, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I expect to hear from them after today,” he added before leaving the premises.

Political Intrigues Deepen in Rivers State

This latest development underscores the deepening power struggle between Fubara and the pro-Wike lawmakers, who have continued to hold their sittings despite the leadership crisis in the assembly. Just recently, Fubara requested to present the 2025 budget before the assembly, a move that faced resistance from the lawmakers aligned with Wike.

Political analysts believe the governor’s inability to access the assembly quarters signals a growing defiance within the state legislature, raising concerns about governance stability in Rivers State. The question remains: Will Fubara find a way to navigate this political minefield, or will this power tussle further cripple his administration?

As the standoff continues, all eyes remain on the unfolding political drama in Rivers State.
