Fubara in Limbo as Rivers Assembly Adjourns Indefinitely
By Parrot Newspaper
The political deadlock in Rivers State has deepened as the House of Assembly, dominated by loyalists of former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has indefinitely suspended its legislative activities. This development comes just as Governor Siminalayi Fubara sought to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.
Fubara, in a letter dated March 13 and addressed to Speaker Martin Amaewhule, expressed his readiness to present the budget on March 19 or any other convenient date within the month. However, the House, in a surprise move on Friday, adjourned sine die after passing three bills, which it announced would be forwarded to the governor for assent.
Assembly vs. Governor: A Deepening Crisis
The indefinite adjournment of the House effectively stalls any further engagement with the executive arm, leaving Fubara’s budget proposal in limbo. The move is seen by analysts as a strategic play by Wike’s loyalists in the House to keep the governor politically boxed in.
Speaker Amaewhule, in a statement issued through his media aide, Martins Wachukwu, defended the House’s action, citing the need to uphold legislative independence. He stated that the lawmakers had only exercised their powers by passing laws that would strengthen governance in the state.
Tensions Rise in Rivers Political Landscape
While the legislative impasse unfolds, tensions are also escalating at the grassroots level. In Abalama community, Asari-Toru Local Government Area, rival political groups are on a collision course.
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Eastern Zone, has scheduled a congress at Abalama Community Secondary School field. Meanwhile, a separate group, the New Associates, has chosen the same venue to host a grand reception for Wike. The situation is particularly volatile given Wike’s recent controversial remarks, in which he allegedly downplayed the influence of the Ijaw people in the Niger Delta region.
The New Associates, led by Dr. Enemi George, insist that Wike deserves a hero’s welcome for his contributions to the Kalabari Kingdom. On the other hand, the IYC remains resolute about holding its congress at the same venue, setting the stage for a potential face-off.

A State in Political Gridlock
The ongoing political crisis in Rivers State underscores the deep factional battle between Fubara and his predecessor. With the House of Assembly now effectively shut down, the fate of the 2025 budget and governance in the state hangs in uncertainty. The coming days will determine whether Fubara can maneuver past these roadblocks or if Wike’s political machine will further tighten its grip on Rivers politics.
