Fresh Tragedy in Benue: Gunmen Attack Ikobi, Hijack Bus

Another wave of insecurity hit Benue State on Thursday night as gunmen hijacked a fully loaded Benue Links bus in Ikobi, Otukpo Local Government Area. The assailants fatally shot the driver before kidnapping all passengers onboard, leaving behind only a toddler.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to eyewitness reports, the attackers laid an ambush along the highway, intercepting the bus in a well-coordinated strike. After killing the driver, they herded the terrified passengers into the dense bush, their fates unknown. Disturbingly, this incident underscores the worsening security situation in Benue, a state grappling with relentless violence.

Authorities Silent as Fear Grips Residents

As of the time of reporting, the Benue State government and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement. However, sources confirm that security operatives have been alerted and are actively tracking the victims’ whereabouts.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the region, with residents expressing growing frustration over the government’s perceived inaction. Fear and uncertainty now loom over travelers, many of whom depend on public transport for interstate movement.

Idoma Youth President Slams Government Inaction

Reacting to the latest abduction, the president of Ochetoha K’Idoma youth wing, Mike Magaji, condemned the state government’s handling of security crises. According to Magaji, Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent visit to Otukpo failed to address the deepening crisis.

> “It is heartbreaking that our people continue to live in fear while the government remains silent. How many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken?” he lamented.

> “The governor’s visit to Otukpo was a disappointment. Our people expected leadership, not vague reassurances. We need a clear plan to end these attacks.”

The Growing Threat of Kidnappings in Benue

The latest attack adds to the growing list of kidnappings that have plagued Benue in recent months. The highway routes have become increasingly unsafe, with criminals exploiting security lapses to target travelers. Reports indicate that ransom demands have soared, making abductions a lucrative criminal enterprise.

What’s Next? Security Agencies on Alert

When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, stated that she had yet to confirm the incident. However, pressure is mounting on law enforcement to act swiftly in locating the victims and apprehending the perpetrators.

For now, the fate of the kidnapped passengers remains uncertain, while the people of Benue await action from both state and federal authorities. The question remains: will this tragedy prompt real change, or will it become yet another statistic in the growing list of unchecked atrocities?
