Abuja — President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to securing a prosperous future for Nigerian youths, stating that his policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, were aimed at safeguarding the next generation.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the critical role of young people in the country’s development.
Fuel Subsidy Removal: Securing the Future
The President defended his decision to eliminate fuel subsidies, arguing that it was necessary to protect Nigeria’s future.
> “Every decision that I’ve taken is all about tomorrow. When you remove oil subsidy, you’re protecting the future of generations yet unborn, the youth,” Tinubu said.

He pointed out that improved infrastructure and economic prosperity would reduce the trend of young Nigerians leaving the country in search of better opportunities.
> “When you listen to majority of professionals talking about ‘Japa,’ leaving Nigeria, it’s because if you grow prosperity back home and empower people, they will not bother to leave,” he added.
Economic Growth and Youth Involvement
President Tinubu expressed optimism about the Nigerian economy, stating that despite early challenges, progress was evident.
> “When we started, it looked so foggy, dicey, and hopeless. We were fetching water from a dry well. But today, the economy has turned the corner—prices are falling, confidence is improving, and investors are looking in.”
He encouraged youths to take ownership of the country’s future, pledging his government’s support in navigating and solving national challenges.
> “Mine is to help navigate and lift the heavy weight problems, so I can clear the path for you to have a very great future. But it’s in your hands.”
The Youth Confab Planning Committee
The newly inaugurated committee will be responsible for organizing a National Youth Conference aimed at fostering engagement and inclusion in governance. The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, emphasized that the Tinubu administration values youth contributions.
> “This government is a listening one, ready to incorporate the ideas and contributions of young people,” Olawande stated.
Committee members were drawn from key federal ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and international partners like the World Bank, ensuring a broad and inclusive representation.
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa and a lead committee member, commended President Tinubu for recognizing the importance of youth engagement in national development.
Tinubu’s Final Charge to the Youth
In closing, Tinubu urged young Nigerians to leverage technology and agriculture to drive economic transformation.
> “Let’s employ technology every way possible. Let’s work for food sovereignty. I like you, I can’t be youth again—maybe in the next life, I’m envious of all of you.”
With the inauguration of the committee, the stage is set for what is expected to be a crucial dialogue on youth empowerment and national progress.
