Kano Goes Green—and Goats Go to Jail!

In Kano, unexpected twist to Kano State’s bold environmental push, the government has started arresting goats—yes, goats!—for munching on freshly planted tree seedlings under its ambitious Urban Renewal Project.

Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, made the announcement on Friday, revealing that several four-legged offenders are now being held at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command in Kano.

“As part of our Urban Renewal Project, we’re planting trees along major city roads, starting with Lodge Road and Race Course,” Dr. Hashim said with enthusiasm. “This green initiative is not just about beautifying our city—it’s about fighting heat and air pollution, and making Kano a more livable place for everyone.”

But not everyone’s on board—at least not the goats.

According to the commissioner, some residents are letting their goats roam freely, and the animals have developed a taste for the young, vulnerable trees.

“We’ve received numerous complaints, and we’re taking action,” he stated firmly. “Let me be clear—any goat caught feasting on our trees will be impounded. We’ve already taken in several, and we won’t hesitate to do more.”

Yes, the goats are in custody. And no, this is not a joke.

Dr. Hashim urged residents to be part of the solution by keeping their livestock in check and supporting the state’s greening mission.

“This is a shared responsibility,” he emphasized. “Together, we can transform Kano into a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful city. Let’s protect what we’re building.”
