Lagos Assembly in Chaos: Two Speakers, One House
The Lagos State House of Assembly has become a theater of absurdity, with two individuals now claiming to be Speaker—Mudashiru Obasa and Mojisola Meranda. This shameful crisis has thrown governance into disarray, exposing the deep rot within the state’s political structure.

How did we get here? Obasa, who was impeached in January by a majority of lawmakers over allegations of corruption and misconduct, insists he remains Speaker. His return from the United States has only deepened the crisis, as he stormed the Assembly with security operatives, forcing his way into the Speaker’s office. On the other hand, Meranda—backed by over 30 lawmakers—continues to preside over plenary sessions, yet finds herself abandoned by the police, who mysteriously withdrew her security detail.
The intervention of political elders, including Bisi Akande and Olusegun Osoba, has failed. Even President Tinubu’s attempts at mediation have proven ineffective, further proving that the Lagos political elite have lost control of their own house.
What does this mean for Lagosians? While the so-called lawmakers play musical chairs with leadership, the people are left with stalled governance, a budget in limbo, and a legislature paralyzed by selfish interests. The Lagos Assembly has become a disgraceful spectacle, a mockery of democracy where personal ambitions trump public service.
For how long will Lagosians endure this madness? When will the APC hierarchy put an end to this charade? If this crisis continues, the 10th Assembly risks becoming a complete failure—one defined not by service, but by power struggles and political impunity.
