27-year-old man climbs telecom mast in Gombe and threatens to commit suicide over debts
GOMBE – The Gombe State Police Command has rescued a 27-year-old man, Mohammed Bello, who attempted to take his own life by climbing a telecommunication mast in Gombe town.
According to a statement released on Monday, March 10, 2025, by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, Bello claimed he was being pursued by security agencies over debts he was unable to pay.
The distressing incident occurred on March 8 at Maimala Buni Street, Gombe LGA, when Bello climbed an MTN mast and refused to come down. Concerned citizens alerted the police through the command’s Control Room. In response, the Divisional Police Officer of Pantami Division swiftly mobilized officers to the scene.
Upon engaging with the man, officers learned that he was overwhelmed by financial difficulties and preferred ending his life to facing his creditors.
In a dramatic turn, a respected community leader, Katukan Gombe, intervened and persuaded Bello to descend, assuring him that his financial troubles would be addressed. Following this reassurance, Bello complied and was taken into police custody.

“The Gombe State Police Command commends the swift response of its officers and the intervention of community stakeholders in resolving the situation peacefully,” DSP Abdullahi stated. He further urged the public to seek lawful and constructive solutions to financial challenges rather than resorting to self-harm.
The incident underscores the growing economic pressure on individuals and the need for better support systems for those facing financial distress. Authorities continue to encourage debtors to explore mediation and legal avenues instead of taking extreme measures.
