Midterm Scorecard: Buhari Hails Tinubu, Says Fixing Nigeria Is Everyone’s Business

As President Bola Tinubu marks his second year in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has thrown his weight behind the current administration, calling for national patience and collective responsibility in navigating Nigeria’s economic and political challenges.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari congratulated Tinubu on reaching the midterm milestone and urged Nigerians to moderate their expectations. He emphasized that while the government has embarked on ambitious reforms, progress will take time.

“Reforms will achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari stated, warning that critical policy changes must not be undermined by “nettlesome domestic politics.”

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu has rolled out sweeping reforms under his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” including the removal of petrol subsidies, liberalization of the naira, and repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. These moves, while applauded in some quarters, have triggered a sharp rise in the cost of living and provoked widespread public frustration.

Buhari acknowledged the toll these economic shocks have taken on ordinary Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable, but stressed that the responsibility of nation-building must be shared.

“The task of tackling poverty and inflation must not rest solely on the government. The private sector and citizens alike must lend their support in any way they can,” he said.

The former president also voiced strong backing for Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, which last week endorsed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, a move that comes amid growing defections from opposition parties.

Offering words of encouragement, Buhari urged Nigerians to remain optimistic and trust in the government’s path.

“Our expectations from government should be realistic. I congratulate President Tinubu on his two years in office and wish him continued wisdom and care in leadership,” he concluded.

Midterm Scorecard

As Nigeria grapples with the consequences of reform, Buhari’s message frames the Tinubu midterm moment not just as a test of political will—but as a call for national unity in the face of adversity.
