Babangida Describes Mokwa Flood Tragedy as ‘Act of God,’ Urges Prayers for Victims
Minna, Niger State — Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has described the recent flood disaster in Mokwa that claimed over 200 lives as a tragedy “ordained by God” and “beyond human control.”
The retired general made the remarks at his Hilltop residence in Minna on Saturday, while receiving a Sallah homage from the Niger State delegation led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.
“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate, but it is ordained by Allah,” Babangida said solemnly. “It is an act of God and beyond our powers. This is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased and show love to the victims.”
The former head of state extended his condolences to the affected families and the Niger State government, urging continued prayers and communal support for survivors of the disaster.
The flood, which swept through Mokwa Local Government Area, has left the region reeling. With more than 200 lives lost, countless homes destroyed, and families displaced, local authorities say recovery will take time, resources, and national empathy.
General Babangida also used the occasion to commend the current administration of Governor Umaru Bago for what he described as “remarkable developmental efforts,” urging continuity in service delivery and infrastructural progress.
In his response, Deputy Governor Garba praised Babangida’s enduring legacy and national influence.
“We appreciate your service to Nigeria and your consistent support to Niger State,” Garba said. “Your presence remains a pillar of hope for this country.”
On the flood, the deputy governor echoed Babangida’s sentiments. “The General is deeply disturbed by the tragedy in Mokwa. What we need now is collective prayer and compassion. We thank you for your fatherly role, especially during such a trying time.”
