Tension gripped Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday, May 26, after the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, allegedly in police custody, sparked violent protests and led to the destruction of the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters.

According to eyewitness accounts, Musa was arrested over a traffic-related offence and allegedly died during interrogation. Residents claim the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), identified as Baba Ali, subjected the youth to severe physical assault, which they say led to his death.

“A young man was beaten mercilessly by the DPO. Later, we heard he died in their custody. That’s what triggered the protest,” said a resident identified simply as Muhammad.

The incident quickly escalated as angry youths took to the streets, demanding justice. The protest turned chaotic when police reportedly fired shots to disperse the crowd, injuring at least two demonstrators—Hassan Salisu Hassan and Muhammad Ibrahim—who are currently receiving treatment at the Rano General Hospital.

In retaliation, enraged protesters hurled stones at police officers before setting the station ablaze. The DPO, Baba Ali, was reportedly injured during the confrontation and is also receiving medical attention.

The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Its spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, assured the public that a thorough investigation would be carried out.
