LAGOS — Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has defended the price of petrol in Nigeria, insisting that it remains among the cheapest in the West African subregion.

Speaking on Thursday during the launch of the Deep Sea Port Access Road reconstruction project in Lagos State, the President of Dangote Group said the cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria is still far below what is obtainable in neighbouring countries.

“Some people here in Nigeria might think that petrol at less than ₦900 is expensive,” Dangote said, “but there is nowhere in West Africa where petrol is not selling above $1, which is about ₦1,600.”

He also expressed satisfaction over the improved availability of fuel nationwide following the recent operational boost at the Dangote Refinery.

“The majority of fuel stations that were not working are now back to work. There is no more shortage, no more queues, and there will never be,” he assured.

Currently, petrol is sold across Nigeria at prices ranging between ₦800 and over ₦1,000 per litre, depending on region and supply logistics.

In a symbolic gesture, Dangote announced that the road leading to the Dangote Refinery would be named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, crediting the administration’s support for critical infrastructure.

The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, is expected to play a major role in Nigeria’s quest for energy self-sufficiency and economic revitalization.
