Pope Gets Temporary Replacement for Ash Wednesday

As Pope Francis continues to battle respiratory complications, the Vatican has appointed Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, a former vicar of Rome, to lead the Ash Wednesday service in his place. The decision comes amid heightened concerns about the Pope’s health after he suffered two episodes of respiratory failure on Monday.

Health Concerns and Hospitalization

The 88-year-old Pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14 with bronchitis, which later developed into pneumonia in both lungs. According to the Vatican, he experienced acute respiratory insufficiency due to a buildup of mucus in his airways, requiring two bronchoscopies to clear the secretions. Despite being placed back on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the Pope remains alert and cooperative.

Speculation Over Pope’s Future

The temporary handover of duties has fueled speculation about Pope Francis’ ability to continue leading the Catholic Church. Reports suggest that some cardinals are openly discussing potential successors, but Argentine journalist and biographer Elisabetta Pique insists the Pope has no plans to resign.

Vatican’s Position

While the Pope’s prognosis remains uncertain, Vatican officials emphasize that he is still in charge and making decisions. His absence from the Ash Wednesday service is seen as a precautionary measure rather than an indication of an imminent transition.
