Benue Boils Over Emmanuella’s Death: Youths Demand Justice in Makurdi Protest
Makurdi, the usually calm capital of Benue State, was anything but quiet today.
The city woke up to the sounds of angry voices and raised placards as hundreds of youths hit the streets, demanding answers and justice for Emmanuella Ahenjir — a 23-year-old final-year student of Federal University, Wukari, who was reportedly gunned down by police last Friday.
According to witnesses, Emmanuella was inside a vehicle driving from the Gyado Villa axis when police allegedly opened fire near Wurukum roundabout — a scene now stained with tragedy and fury.
Her death has stirred up deep emotions and fierce outrage. Leading the charge on Tuesday was well-known gender rights advocate, Ukan Kurugh, alongside a sea of young protesters. Their voices echoed through the streets as they marched, holding placards with bold messages like “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella.”
Their demand is clear and loud: an immediate and transparent investigation into what happened — and accountability for those responsible.
