Rano Crisis Deepens as DPO Is Killed, Police Arrest 27
By Parrot Investigative Desk
Rano, Kano State – May 26, 2025
What began as a protest over the alleged custodial death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, has escalated into a full-blown tragedy in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State, culminating in the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Baba Ali.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed late Monday that the DPO died from injuries sustained during a violent mob attack on the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters. The attack followed widespread outrage over the death of Musa, who had been arrested hours earlier.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the chain of events began after a complaint was lodged against Musa, who was allegedly operating a motorcycle under the influence and disturbing the peace.
“The suspect was taken into custody and later showed signs of weakness, prompting his being rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away on May 26, 2025, at about 06:00 a.m. while receiving treatment,” Kiyawa said.

However, residents allege that Musa died as a result of brutal interrogation by the police—a claim that has fueled anger and suspicions of foul play. Eyewitnesses had earlier accused DPO Baba Ali of personally assaulting the deceased.
In the wake of Musa’s death, irate youths stormed the police station, setting it ablaze and clashing with officers. During the chaos, DPO Baba Ali sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police have since arrested 27 suspects in connection with the violence. SP Kiyawa assured that the situation has been brought under control following the deployment of reinforcements.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene and held emergency consultations with the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar. The Commissioner also ordered a full-scale investigation into both the custodial death of Musa and the killing of the DPO.
While calm is said to be returning, residents remain on edge as questions mount over the conduct of the police, the circumstances of Musa’s death, and the growing mistrust between law enforcement and the community.
