Rev Father Slumps, Dies While Playing Tennis in Anambra
A wave of grief has swept through Awka, Anambra State, following the sudden and heartbreaking death of Reverend Father Anthony Udogu, a well-loved Catholic priest from the Diocese of Awka.
The tragic incident happened while Fr. Udogu was enjoying a game of lawn tennis — a casual match that turned into a moment of sorrow. According to an official statement by the Diocese, the priest collapsed on the court and, despite being rushed to the hospital, could not be revived.
“It is with faith in the resurrection of the Lord that we announce the passing of our brother priest, Rev Fr Anthony Udogu, who died suddenly this morning,” said Rev Fr Charles Ndubuisi, the Diocesan Chancellor.
Fr. Udogu wasn’t just any priest. He was the Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi, Awka, and also served as the Dean of Awka Deanery II. Known for his deep commitment to pastoral work, community upliftment, and spiritual leadership, his death leaves a painful void in the hearts of many.
Parishioners, fellow clergy, and members of the community have been sharing stories and memories of a man they say was not just a priest, but a friend, mentor, and tireless servant of God.
The Diocese has extended its deepest sympathies to Fr. Udogu’s family, parishioners, and all those mourning his untimely death. Details of his burial will be announced soon.
“May his soul find rest in the bosom of the Lord,” the Diocese prayed.
