Bilopillia, Ukraine – A Russian drone strike on Saturday morning killed nine civilians and injured four others when a passenger bus was hit in the northeastern Ukrainian town of Bilopillia, according to regional authorities.

The Sumy Regional Military Administration confirmed the incident in a statement posted on Telegram, saying the drone attack targeted a commuter bus traveling toward the regional capital, Sumy, at approximately 6:17 a.m. local time (03:17 GMT).
“Emergency services, police, and medics are currently working at the scene,” the statement read. Local officials said the drone involved was likely a Russian-made Lancet, a loitering munition frequently used by Moscow in its strikes on Ukrainian territory.
Russia Ukraine peace talks ends in stalemate
Sumy regional governor Oleh Hryhorov condemned the strike in a video address, describing the attack as “inhumane” and “a deliberate targeting of civilians.” He emphasized that those killed were regular commuters, not combatants.
The Russian military has not issued any public comment on the strike.
The deadly attack comes amid fragile diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities. On Friday, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators held their first face-to-face talks in Istanbul since 2022. While no significant progress was made toward ending the war, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war in the coming days—a rare sign of cooperation.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and the conflict has since killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.
