Los Angeles—President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area, escalating a tense standoff between immigration authorities and protesters outraged by a wave of raids targeting undocumented migrants.
The order came after a second consecutive night of unrest in the city’s Paramount neighborhood, where demonstrators clashed with federal agents following aggressive immigration enforcement actions. Authorities used flash-bang grenades, tear gas, and roadblocks in an effort to disperse crowds gathered outside a Home Depot reportedly serving as a temporary base for immigration operations.
In a statement, the White House defended the move as necessary to restore “law and order.”
> “The Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
President Trump, who took office in January after a divisive election, has made immigration enforcement a cornerstone of his administration—branding undocumented migrants as “monsters” and “animals” and vowing to “clean up sanctuary cities.”

The National Guard deployment followed Friday’s coordinated workplace raids across Los Angeles, where masked and heavily armed immigration agents stormed multiple businesses. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the president’s decision to deploy troops as a deliberate provocation.
