Trump Deploys National Guard to Los Angeles as Immigration Protests Erupt
Governor Newsom Condemns Move as “Inflammatory” Amid Growing Tensions

Los Angeles—President Donald Trump on Saturday ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area, escalating a tense standoff between immigration authorities and protesters outraged by a wave of raids targeting undocumented migrants.
The order came after a second consecutive night of unrest in the city’s Paramount neighborhood, where demonstrators clashed with federal agents following aggressive immigration enforcement actions. Authorities used flash-bang grenades, tear gas, and roadblocks in an effort to disperse crowds gathered outside a Home Depot reportedly serving as a temporary base for immigration operations.
In a statement, the White House defended the move as necessary to restore “law and order.”
> “The Trump Administration has a zero-tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is aimed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
President Trump, who took office in January after a divisive election, has made immigration enforcement a cornerstone of his administration—branding undocumented migrants as “monsters” and “animals” and vowing to “clean up sanctuary cities.”

The National Guard deployment followed Friday’s coordinated workplace raids across Los Angeles, where masked and heavily armed immigration agents stormed multiple businesses. The raids sparked instant backlash, with spontaneous protests erupting across the city and evolving into heated stand-offs between residents and federal forces.
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the president’s decision to deploy troops as a deliberate provocation.
> “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions,” Newsom said on X, formerly Twitter. “We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need.”

Despite the governor’s objection, the deployment went ahead late Saturday, with military vehicles seen arriving in several neighborhoods by nightfall.
Tensions remain high across Los Angeles as civil rights groups, immigrant advocates, and local officials call for restraint—and answers.
This developing story continues to expose deep fault lines in America’s immigration debate, pitting federal authority against state resistance and sparking fears of wider unrest in other major cities.
